Josh Buys A Canoe

July 27, 2008 10:52 pm

After two trips of fishing from the shore, I decided if I wanted to go after the big fish, I needed a boat. I’m a college student so I don’t have a lot of money for a boat, but I saw that many of the houses on the lake had canoes. I figured that might be a good idea for me. I can leave it on the car, fish after work, and take it home for the winter (Hopefully I can throw it in my aunt’s barn). The real selling point for a canoe was that I don’t have to buy gas.

One of my flaws is that I am extremely impulsive, especially when shopping. If I decide I need something, I just go out and buy it. I don’t waste a lot of time on research. I knew a few things about canoes, because I grew up kayaking, and the two are pretty similar. So I went on craigslist and checked out canoes. I saw that there was an Old Towne listed for 400 dollars, and it had a roof top carrying kit. This seemed like a good buy, since I knew that Old Towne’s are good boats. I did a little research (no more than 20 minutes on Google), and made up my mind. This was the boat for me. I emailed the seller and made sure it was still available (Which it was). I decided this was the type of purchase I should talk to my father about, since he knows more about small boats than I do, and he said it sounded like a good buy.

Fishing Trip #2

10:52 pm

The next morning I went back to the fishing spot I found. This morning I caught a few pan fish early in the morning, but after that all I got was a sunburn. Around 2 I decided it was time to call it quits and head home. Even without anymore catches, I had a great time and could not wait to get back out fishing. I think the only reason I left was because I didn’t have any sunscreen. That will have to be added to the growing list of things I need…

I Love Fishing

10:51 pm

I went home to visit the family two weeks ago, and spent the time sailing and fishing with my brother. When we were kids we would often go fishing, but rarely catch anything. But it didn’t matter, it was a way to hang out and drink a few beers out on the piers of West Haven, CT. We always joked that we had the longest running dry streak of any fisherman EVER.

When I was home, we went to my Aunt’s house where my brother is staying for the summer (he is working for her all summer) and did some fishing on a lake down the road. We caught more small mouth bass than I think I’d ever caught. So I decided to bring a few rods back to school with me (and they were already in the car…). Once I got back to New Brunswick, I decided it was time to find a place to fish. I refuse to fish the Raritan river down here, because it is absolutely filthy. I looked at an areal view of the area using Google Maps, and found Weston Mills Pond. It has a great boat launch area to park in, and has been stocked with Large Mouth Bass before, so presumably was stocked this season as well. So I went to Walmart (I hate that place) and picked up a few cheap spinners and a fishing license.

All About Josh

10:51 pm

Hello, I’m Josh Owen. I grew up in New Haven, CT and attended Wilbur Cross High School. I was a 4 year captain of the Ice Hockey team, a 2 year captain of the Lacrosse team, and a bench-warmer on the soccer team (at least after my sophomore year when we were good). I managed to graduate in 2004 with honors, without putting in too much effort.

I am attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. I will graduate in December, 2008 with a double major in Computer Science and Economics. I played Ice Hockey here for the last four years, and am now out of eligibility. My senior year I was a captain, but was hampered by injuries for most of the year.

For the last 2 years I have worked for a web start up company selling sports collectibles. We are an eBay consignment firm, and I am employee #2 (Employee #1 has left the company). I do database administration and program the back-office software we use. I also write some CRM software and do web development here and there.

Outside the office I play men’s league hockey, and have recently taken up fishing again. I also enjoy going out drinking with the guys and always come back with a story to tell… (I sometimes turn into a bit of a shit-show).
